What Kind of Electrified Vehicle is Right for You?
There are four basic kinds of ‘electrified’ vehicles on the market today. Here’s what you should know about your options:
- Mild hybrids are very similar to traditional gas-powered vehicles. However, they have small electric motors that can boost horsepower or torque without burning through fuel.
- Conventional hybrids have both a gas engine and an electric motor, and both power sources run concurrently. You’ll fill up at local stations, and you won’t have to change anything about the way you drive—but you’ll get better fuel economy than you might be used to.
- Plug-in hybrids give you options: you can travel with gas alone, use gas and electricity together, or go for short distances using nothing but electric power. You’ll need to plug in to keep the battery recharged, but if and when charging becomes inconvenient, you can continue to drive without interruption.
- Fully electric vehicles might be more expensive up front, but they’re more affordable to own over the long term. These models get the best fuel economy, but you’ll need to get used to charging up at (public or private) stations in our region.
